'First Light is a winner!
Michelle Frost is an exciting new novelist who creates a world reminiscent of LeGuin's Earthsea in many ways. A fluid and skilled writer, Frost expertly draws us into the inter-weaving of the lives of seven very diverse characters. She leads them and us through solving an ancient puzzle that would change their lives and their world.
"Follow the colours of your soul."
I look forward to further adventures with the inhabitants of Sindorus and being delighted by Ms. Frost's unique and exhilarating story-telling.'

I must admit I'm a sucker for good covers, so when I picked up First Light, I was sceptical.
I need not have been, as it turns out. The book had me from the very first page to the very last! Not one second was boring and not one word was irrelevant! One of my favourite parts about the book is how all the characters link in the most unpredictable and fascinating ways! I was delighted every time a new link between characters was revealed. Another favourite part was how much I identified with quite a few of the characters. They were so *human* that they came to life in my head! The plot was amazing, to say the least. Very original with lots of twists.
I laughed, cried and felt like I was "in" on everything going on in the book.'

'Her characters started to surprise me...
...in the first chapter, and I was still being surprised at the end. Their lifes took on a life energy of their own, and my sense was that they wrote the story. Those are always my favourite stories, the ones where the characters become alive to me.'

In her book Michelle Frost paints a world with no hope. Or as she declares on the book's cover: a world, where colour is a crime. Oh horror! Her writing makes this unthinkable world take shape to a point so realistic that you can almost taste the dust and feel the harsh light of this world on your skin. Luckily, the colour still lives in the hearts of a few people in these alien surroundings, and it is the destinies of these few we follow throughout the pages.
The characters being so utterly vivid, almost as if you had known them forever yourself, and the very idea behind the story being woven into a pattern, where at times you know exactly where the story is headed for, only to realize on the next page that you haven't got a clue, make this book a true page turner. And Michelle keeps you guessing, of yes, she does. All the way to the last few pages, where she finally reveals her bigger picture. Which, I might add, is breathtakingly beautiful.
All in all, an extremely enjoyable read. But this book has it's downside also: it ends. Just when she finally sheds light to the true colours of the story... it's over. As luck will have it, the end leaves the door open to a sequel, and I do hope she is busily working on.'
